Promotes Sustainable Farming Practices

Umiam: The College of Post Graduate Studies in Agricultural Sciences (CPGSAS), Umiam, observed World Environment Day 2026 on Friday in association with the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, a flagship campaign of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India. The programme was held at Sohkhwai Village in Meghalaya under the guidance and presence of Dean Dr. Dwipendra Thakuria.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from farmers of Sohkhwai and nearby villages, including Nongtralaw and Umden-la-ang. A total of 56 participants, comprising farmers, faculty members and students, attended the awareness programme.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Thakuria highlighted the harmful effects of excessive and indiscriminate use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on soil health and water quality.

He stressed the need for adopting environmentally sustainable agricultural practices and preserving Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) to ensure long-term agricultural sustainability and conservation of natural resources.

The programme was also attended by Dr. P. K. Bora and Dr. Vishram Ram, Professors of the School of Natural Resource Management (SNRM), who interacted with farmers and shared insights on sustainable farming techniques and climate-resilient agriculture.

During the programme, discussions were held on environmental conservation, responsible farming practices and the importance of protecting natural resources. Participants actively engaged in the interactive sessions and expressed their commitment to promoting eco-friendly agricultural methods in their communities.

The event began with a welcome address by Dr. Amit Mishra, Associate Professor, while the programme was coordinated and hosted by Dr. Vinay Kumar Gautam, Assistant Professor, CPGSAS, Umiam.

Organisers stated that the initiative helped raise awareness about sustainable agriculture and reinforced the importance of collective efforts to safeguard the environment for future generations.
