Silchar: Dr. JP Das, identified as Jayanta Prasad Das, who was previously arrested in connection with an alleged fake medical degree racket in Barak Valley, has once again landed in police custody after a missing minor girl was rescued from a hotel owned by him in Cachar district.
According to reports, a 16-year-old girl, who had been reported missing, was rescued by police and local residents from the Parijat Hotel and Restaurant at Lathigram on June 16. The establishment is owned by Das. The incident triggered widespread public outrage, with an angry crowd gathering at the spot and vandalising parts of the hotel premises.
Witnesses alleged that Das attempted to flee the scene after the girl’s presence at the hotel came to light. However, local residents reportedly apprehended him and handed him over to the police. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances under which the minor was being kept at the establishment.
Police sources said the case is being investigated from multiple angles, including possible offences related to the detention of a minor and other serious allegations. Further details are awaited as the investigation progresses.

The latest arrest comes less than a year after Das was taken into custody by Cachar Police in October 2025 in connection with an alleged bogus medical degree racket. At that time, investigators described him as the alleged kingpin of a network that operated under the banner of the “National Institute of Medical Sciences” (NIMS).
Police had alleged that the institute issued unauthorised certificates and degrees in alternative medicine, which were subsequently used by unqualified individuals to practice as medical professionals in different parts of the region. Authorities had claimed that the operation enabled several people without recognised medical qualifications to present themselves as doctors.
The fresh allegations against Das have once again drawn public attention to his controversial past and raised concerns among residents. Police have not yet disclosed the full list of charges in the latest case, and investigations remain ongoing.
Officials said further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
