Calls It a Tribute to His Enduring Legacy

Silchar/New Delhi: Rajya Sabha MP Kanad Purkayastha on Tuesday described receiving the Padma Shri on behalf of his late father, Kabindra Purkayastha, as one of the most emotional moments of his life.
The prestigious civilian honour was presented by the Hon’ble President of India during a ceremony held in New Delhi. Accepting the award on behalf of his father, Kanad Purkayastha said the occasion filled him with immense pride, gratitude and a deep sense of longing.
Reflecting on the moment, he said he missed his father more than ever and wished he had been present to witness the nation recognising a lifetime dedicated to public service and the welfare of the people.
“As I held this honour in my hands, I felt his presence in spirit. I could almost hear his gentle words and see his humble smile,” Purkayastha said, expressing hope that his father would be happy to know that his work and sacrifices had been remembered and honoured by the country he loved.
He described the Padma Shri not merely as an award, but as a tribute to his father’s ideals, unwavering commitment and lasting legacy. Purkayastha also expressed gratitude to the President of India and the Government of India, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for conferring the honour.
“With folded hands and a heart full of gratitude, I bow to his memory,” he said, adding that he hoped to remain worthy of carrying forward the values and principles for which his father stood.
The Padma Shri is among India’s highest civilian honours and is awarded for distinguished service in various fields. The recognition of the late Kabindra Purkayastha has been widely welcomed as a tribute to his contributions and dedication to public service.
