NEW DELHI — In a major escalation surrounding the controversy at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the Delhi Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) naming Congress Lok Sabha MP and professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following an official complaint lodged by the university’s Chief Security Officer.

The FIR, dated October 11, 2026, was registered at the Vasant Kunj North Police Station under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS):

  •  Section 75, 75(1)(i), and 75(1)(iv): Pertaining to sexual harassment and unwelcome physical contact or demands/advances.
  •  Section 79: Concerning words, gestures, or acts intended to insult the modesty of a woman.

Background & Recent Developments

The formal registration of the criminal case follows the university administration’s decision on October 9, 2026, to terminate Prof. Akoijam’s services based on recommendations by the university’s Internal Committee (IC).

Akoijam, who represents the Inner Manipur parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha, has vehemently denied all accusations, describing the proceedings as a politically motivated witch-hunt riddled with procedural blunders and institutional prejudice.

In his recent statements countering the university leadership, the parliamentarian-academic raised serious questions regarding:

  •  Due Process Violations: Asserting that his defense witnesses deposed on August 14, 2026, and that he submitted full written and oral statements, contrary to claims of non-cooperation made to the media.
  •  Inconsistent Allegations: Criticising shifting figures regarding the number of complainants and strongly refuting sensational narratives floated in public discussions.
  • Institutional Propriety: Accusing the administration of bypassing statutory frameworks and engaging in a parallel “media trial.”

Delhi Police officials stated that an investigation into the matter is actively underway.
