Guwahati | Dibisa Mahanta, daughter of Assam Revenue Minister and senior Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leader Keshab Mahanta, has sparked a political controversy after videos circulating on social media showed her raising an abusive slogan against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest in Guwahati over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.

The demonstration, organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) at Chachal on July 23, demanded education reforms and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged examination irregularities.

Videos from the protest showed Dibisa Mahanta participating alongside student activists, holding placards and chanting slogans, including one directed at the Prime Minister that contained abusive language. The footage quickly went viral, triggering widespread debate on social media and drawing criticism over the use of offensive remarks against the Prime Minister.

Dibisa Mahanta is the daughter of Keshab Mahanta, a senior AGP leader who serves as Assam’s Revenue Minister in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government.

Her participation in the protest, and particularly the slogan captured in the viral videos, prompted political reactions online, with many users questioning the involvement of a cabinet minister’s family member in a demonstration critical of the Union government. Others criticised the use of abusive language in political protests.

India Today NE reported that repeated attempts to contact Dibisa Mahanta for her response were unsuccessful. Assam Revenue Minister Keshab Mahanta was also unavailable for comment when contacted regarding the controversy.

Following the circulation of the videos, Dibisa Mahanta’s social media account appeared to have been deactivated or removed, making it inaccessible.

The protest was attended by students, youth groups and civil society members from Assam and other northeastern states. Organisers said the demonstration was held in solidarity with activist Sonam Wangchuk and students protesting in New Delhi, while demanding greater transparency, accountability and comprehensive reforms in the country’s examination system following the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.

Protesters also sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, alleging repeated irregularities in national-level examinations. The gathering expressed solidarity with students reportedly injured during the “Chalo Sansad” protest in New Delhi earlier this week.

The Guwahati protest coincided with nationwide demonstrations over the alleged examination irregularities. On July 23, Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike after discussions with the Centre.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the Centre would introduce legislation to establish fast-track courts and provide for stricter punishment in examination paper leak cases, reiterating the government’s commitment to protecting students’ interests.

The protest concluded peacefully, but the viral videos featuring Dibisa Mahanta became the focal point of political discussion in Assam, drawing attention across social media and political circles.
