Dibrugarh : An Assam Rifles post in Arunachal Pradesh’s Changlang district came under militant fire on Friday morning, triggering a security operation near the India-Myanmar border ahead of Independence Day.

The incident took place at Longvi under Nampong Police Station, a remote border village in the Jairampur-Nampong area. No casualties were reported, according to security sources.

The attackers allegedly opened fire on the Assam Rifles post from across the India-Myanmar border, following which security personnel retaliated. The exchange of fire reportedly caused tension in the surrounding area.

Sources said the militants opened indiscriminate fire on the post before Assam Rifles personnel responded with heavy fire. The attackers subsequently fled towards the border area.

Security agencies suspect the involvement of ULFA-I or NSCN-K-YA, both of which have previously called for a boycott of Independence Day celebrations. However, the identities of those behind the attack had not been officially confirmed.

Following the incident, security forces launched a search operation to trace the attackers and intensified surveillance around the Assam Rifles post and adjoining areas.

Longvi’s proximity to the international boundary with Myanmar makes the area strategically sensitive, with security forces maintaining heightened vigilance against militant movement and cross-border activities.

Assam Rifles installations in Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the Northeast have been targeted by militant groups in the past.

The latest firing comes ahead of Independence Day, prompting security agencies to step up monitoring and area domination operations along vulnerable stretches of the international border.
