NEW DELHI: Himachal Pradesh was honoured at a national-level function held in New Delhi on International Literacy Day for its achievement of becoming a fully literate state under the New India Literacy Programme (ULLAS).

Education Minister Rohit Thakur received the honour on behalf of the state at the function.Thakur said Himachal Pradesh has now recorded a literacy rate of 99.55 per cent, making it the second-highest literate state in the country after Goa, which has a literacy rate of 99.7 per cent.

The state was declared fully literate on September 8, 2025, when its literacy rate stood at 99.3 per cent.Thakur said the achievement reflected the sustained efforts of the state government, teachers, education workers and other stakeholders towards improving literacy and ensuring access to education.

The recognition on International Literacy Day marked a significant milestone for Himachal Pradesh in its efforts to achieve universal literacy.
