SHILLONG | Two unidentified men allegedly hurled petrol bombs at Laban police station in Shillong in the early hours of Saturday, trigger- ing a fire on the police premises, officials said. The attackers, travelling on a two-wheeler, reportedly threw two petrol bombs at around 2.30 am before fleeing the spot.

No police personnel were injured in the incident, Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said. The attack was captured on CCTV cameras installed at the police station. Police are examining the footage to identify the suspects and establish their movements before and after the incident.The petrol bombs caused a fire inside the police premises, but police per- sonnel managed to extinguish the flames before they could cause further damage.

No arrests have been made so far, Syiem said, adding that an investigation is underway. Police are also examining evidence collected from the scene. The motive behind the attack has not yet been established. Investigators have not ruled out the possible involvement of groups supporting the demand for implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.
