Shillong | Four separate bomb and arson attacks targeting government and police establishments were reported in Shillong over two days, prompting authorities to step up security across the city, officials said.

No casualties were reported in the incidents between Wednesday evening and early Thursday. The attackers and their motive have not yet been identified.

The latest incident took place in the early hours of Thursday when a petrol bomb was allegedly hurled at the Directorate of Health Services campus in Laitumkhrah, triggering a fire. Firefighters were called in to contain the blaze.

Around the same time, a police booth at Nongmynsong was set on fire. A woman passerby alerted personnel at the nearby police outpost around 3.50 am, following which Fire and Emergency Services personnel reached the spot. The booth was destroyed, but no one was injured.

Police said preliminary investigation indicated that a tyre may have been set on fire to cause the blaze, though efforts are underway to establish what happened and identify those responsible.

The two incidents followed a petrol bomb attack on Lumdiengjri Police Station on Wednesday night. The bomb hit the rear portion of the officer-in-charge’s room, causing minor damage.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, a petrol bomb was hurled at the Directorate of Mineral Resources office at Risa Colony. A private vehicle belonging to a DMR employee was damaged, while residents managed to put out the fire.

Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify the perpetrators and determine whether the four incidents were connected. Security has been tightened around government and police establishments across Shillong.
