Gangtok | A major landslide struck Rimbi village in Sikkim’s Gyalshing district late Thursday night, damaging homes, roads and other infrastructure following continuous heavy rain in the area. No casualties have been reported so far.

The landslide occurred in the Yuksom-Tashiding constituency, where residents have already been facing difficulties due to prolonged ground instability. An active landslide in the area in August had reportedly put more than 150 people at risk.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed concern over the latest incident and said the safety of residents remained the government’s top priority. He directed authorities to stay on high alert, monitor the situation closely and take necessary measures to protect people in vulnerable areas.

Tamang also urged residents to remain vigilant, follow official advisories and extend support to those affected as heavy rain continues across the state. The incident comes amid a weather alert issued by the Meteorological Centre, Gangtok, with heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast in parts of Sikkim over the next two days.

Gyalshing, Namchi and Soreng districts are under an orange alert for September 24 and 25. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places in these districts, while heavy rainfall is forecast at some locations on Friday. Gangtok, Mangan and Pakyong are under a yellow alert, with heavy rain possible at isolated places.

The weather department has forecast light to moderate rain at most places in Sikkim from September 24 to 26. Rain is expected at many places on September 27 before gradually easing between September 28 and 30. Officials are likely to maintain closer monitoring in Gyalshing, Namchi and Soreng through Friday because of the possibility of intense rainfall and further landslide activity.
