New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) youth movement has threatened to launch nationwide protests from October 2 if Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar does not resign.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke issued the deadline amid questions over the Election Commission’s handling of voter-list updates.

The development follows an Indian Express report which said that two election commissioners had raised concerns with Kumar on at least 14 occasions over a period of 10 months, mostly in connection with the voter-list revision process.

Opposition parties have alleged irregularities and manipulation in electoral rolls. The Election Commission, however, has rejected the allegations, maintaining that differences of opinion are part of institutional deliberations and that its actions were taken in accordance with the law.

The CJP has said it will begin nationwide protests from October 2 if its demand for the CEC’s resignation is not met.
