MANIPUR: Phungyar MLA Leishiyo Keishing has criticised the Assam Rifles over alleged lapses in border security in Kamjong district along the India-Myanmar border.
Speaking to reporters, Keishing alleged that the force had failed to prevent cross-border attacks, insurgent activities and illegal immigration. He also accused some personnel of prioritising promotions over their security duties and alleged their involvement in illegal timber and areca nut trading.
The MLA’s remarks came after two Tangkhul Naga civilians, Leishisan Hungyo and Ngachanso Ningshen, were killed in a suspected cross-border militant attack on October 10.
Questioning the force’s response to repeated security incidents, Keishing urged the government to replace Assam Rifles personnel deployed in the area.
The allegations have not been independently verified. The Assam Rifles’ response was not available at the time of reporting.
