Guwahati : Assam on Wednesday paid tribute to six police personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past year, as the state observed Police Commemoration Day at the 10th Assam Police Battalion headquarters in Kahilipara.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid a wreath at the martyrs’ altar and paid homage to the fallen personnel. A commemorative parade was also organised to honour police officers and jawans who made the supreme sacrifice while serving the state.

Addressing the gathering, Sarma said 156 police personnel across the country had died in the line of duty over the past year. He noted that Assam Police had lost more than 900 personnel since Independence. “Assam Police lost six officials and jawans in the last one year during duty. Today, we commemorate and remember those six personnel. Since Independence, Assam Police have lost more than 900 personnel,” the Chief Minister said.

Describing the occasion as significant for police forces across the country, Sarma expressed his gratitude to the families of personnel who had died while performing their duties. “I extend my respect and gratitude to all the families who lost their members,” he said.

Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on October 21 in memory of 10 police personnel killed in an ambush by heavily armed Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959. The day honours police personnel who have laid down their lives in the service of the nation.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, addressing the national commemoration programme in New Delhi, highlighted what he described as the Northeast’s progress towards peace following a series of agreements and the surrender of arms by thousands of people.

“Following several agreements and thousands of people laying down their arms, the entire Northeast has moved towards peace,” Shah said, adding that the region had developed an environment conducive to development. Shah also commended police personnel and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) for their contribution to maintaining internal security. He particularly praised the CAPF and the CoBRA Battalion for their role in operations against Left-wing extremism.

The commemorations in Assam and New Delhi underscored the sacrifices made by police personnel in maintaining security, while highlighting the continuing focus on peace and stability across the Northeast.
