SILCHAR, Oct 31:

Setting the stage for the formal installation of Silchar’s first elected civic body in six years, the Assam Department of Housing and Urban Affairs (DoHUA) has officially convened the inaugural meeting of the newly formed Silchar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on November 5.

According to an official notification issued by Urban Development Department Secretary Richand Ahmed, the November 5 session follows the October 26 gazette notification formally declaring the elected ward commissioners. During the maiden session, the 42 newly elected councillors will be administered the oath of office, followed by the formal election of Silchar’s first-ever Mayor and Deputy Mayor under the provisions of the Assam Municipal Corporation Act, 2022.

Landslide Mandate for the NDA

The inaugural meeting comes on the heels of the historic SMC elections held earlier this month via ballot paper. In the results declared on October 6, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) swept the 42-ward corporation, securing a commanding 34 seats:

The Party & Winners

| BJP | Contested 38 | Won 32 | Swept the majority of urban wards across Silchar

| Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) | Contested 4 | Won 2 | NDA ally; won Wards 16 and 26

| Indian National Congress | Contested 38 | Won 2 | Secured Wards 30 and 41

| Independents | Contested 52 | Won 6 | Emerged as the second-largest bloc ahead of Congress

With the NDA holding a comfortable majority well past the halfway mark of 22, the election of the BJP-backed candidates for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor on November 5 is set to be a smooth affair.

End of a Six-Year Civic Vacuum

The upcoming session marks a major administrative milestone for southern Assam’s economic hub. Silchar last held civic body elections a decade ago when it operated as a Municipal Board. After the board’s term expired and it was dissolved six years ago, the town remained under administrative rule before officially being upgraded to a Municipal Corporation in September 2025. Once sworn in on November 5, the new council will immediately face pressing urban challenges raised by residents during the campaign—most notably chronic waterlogging, dilapidated city roads, inadequate drainage networks, waste management, and irregular drinking water supply.
