Silchar: The Silchar branch of Bharat Vikas Parishad commemorated its 63rd Foundation Day with a solemn yet spirited programme recently held at a local hall. The event reflected the organisation’s unwavering dedication to social service, national unity, and inclusive development.
The celebration was presided over by Jyotirmoy Dutta, president of the Parishad’s Silchar branch, and attended by several dignitaries. Noted physician and social worker Dr. Satya Ranjan Bhattacharjee graced the occasion as chief guest.
The programme began with a collective rendition of Vande Mataram by artists from the Agnik cultural organisation, followed by floral tributes to Bharat Mata and Swami Vivekananda setting a tone of reverence and patriotic fervour.
In recognition of their outstanding contributions to society, two individuals were felicitated: former national and state-level hockey coach Samar Krishna Nath, and Lakshman Rabidas, known for his dedicated service at the Silchar cremation ground. Both were honoured with mementos, uttoriyos, and gift items by the Parishad.
Addressing the gathering, advocate and former branch president Rajat Ghosh traced the organisation’s journey since its founding on January 12, 1963 Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary by Dr. Suraj Prakash, Lala Hansraj Gupta, and other visionaries. He noted that the Parishad received official recognition on July 10 of the same year, which is now celebrated as its foundation day.
“The Parishad strives to empower the economically, socially, and physically challenged and bring them into the mainstream,” Ghosh said, adding, “We regard Bharat as our mother and goddess, and uphold national unity and service as sacred duties.”
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Bhattacharjee praised the organisation’s alignment with the ideals of Swami Vivekananda. “Bharat Vikas Parishad truly works in the spirit of Swamiji’s vision. Faith and service must go hand in hand,” he remarked, urging the youth to emulate Vivekananda and contribute positively to society.
Former All-India organisational secretary (Northeast), Angshu Kumar Roy, elaborated on the five guiding principles of the Parishad: relationship, cooperation, values, service, and dedication. He highlighted ongoing initiatives to assist the differently-abled by providing artificial limbs, tricycles, and free medical care at over 100 hospitals nationwide, including a facility in Kota dedicated to critical patients.
Roy also lauded the selfless service of Lakshman Rabidas. “Come rain or shine, he serves at the cremation ground without fail. Such silent heroes deserve our deepest respect,” he said.
Also addressing the gathering was Pradeep Banik, former regional chairman of the Parishad’s Sampark division. The vote of thanks was delivered by branch secretary Shankar Biswas, while the programme was anchored by Nilanjan Paul.
The event also witnessed the induction of new members Amalendu Dey, Swapan Pal, Sudip Chakraborty, Piyal Deb, and Pinakpani Deb who took the oath of service administered by Pradeep Banik. Prominent attendees included social worker Ishwar Bhai Ubadiya, Sanjit Debnath, and Arindam Bhattacharjee.
