Silchar: Bringing an end to days of speculation and political tug-of-war, the BJP-backed candidates for the posts of president and vice-president of Sonabarighat Gaon Panchayat were finally elected on Wednesday under the Banskandi Development Block.
Aman Roy, a member of Group No. 2, was elected as the president of the GP with the support of a majority of the members. Ripa Begum Mazumder of Group No. 1 was chosen as the vice-president. The oath of office was administered to both by the concerned official in the presence of other GP members.
The election comes after a prolonged standoff between two factions within the GP over the top post. Initially, Aman Roy faced strong opposition from Mohibul Islam Choudhury, who had consolidated a five-member group with the backing of Sonai MLA.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, Aman Roy succeeded in breaking Choudhury’s faction by gaining the support of three members from his group. With a total of eight members backing her, she secured the president’s chair.
On the day of the swearing-in, both Mohibul Islam Choudhury and another member, Pulak Roy, were reportedly absent from the proceedings. The developments mark a significant shift in local political dynamics, with the BJP-backed leadership now firmly in place at Sonabarighat GP.
