A total of 37,138 students appeared for the matriculation examination, which was conducted between 28th Feb and 15th March. This is one of the biggest examination exercises done by the State Education Department.

Th. Kirankumar Singh, chairman, BOSEM (Board of Secondary Education Manipur) stated that, “In order to prevent from the use of unfair means we have not used any private examination centres. The answers script correction is done under online CCTV monitoring and the answers scripts all jumble up with no serial codings.”

A student of Pitamabara English School, Kwakeithel under Imphal west district, Bhumika Shamurailatpam d/O of Sh. Tomba Singh & Sh. Shanti Devi of Kakwa Naorem Leikai, Canchipur topped the state  examination, securing 572 out of 600.

KRC caught up with the HSLC topper and had an exclusive chat. Excerpts are given below:-

Q. What was your reaction when you topped the board exams?

A. I have no words to express right now. Yes, I am very happy on achieving this. But I have not expected to top. Nevertheless, I was sure that I would be within the first top ten rankers.

Q. What is your take on the trend of private tutoring centres that have begun  across the state? Do they help the students?

A.Taking tuition helps to some extent like during school classes time goes in controlling other students who disturb the class, by the time the teacher finish controlling them half of the period goes off . Another reason is our surprising bandhs and blockades which leaves a negative impact on our young minds. In these two cases I feel tuition classes help a student. But one should also read and study on daily basis.Without self study how will we recall what we have known? Every student after tuition and school  should devote to cultivate self study, this really helps to great extent. In my case I had gone for all the foundation courses for all the subjects and later I studied it myself after finishing my school hour.

Q. What is your dream job?

A. Scientist!!! This very profession keeps striking me since my childhood. It has all kinds of amazing facts and research done by famous heads. Our state has lesser number of scientists and one needs to do more in this field of science and technology to develop our state.

Q. What are your favourite books other than your study books and your hobbies?

A. I do take out time to read novels and adventurous stories. I also love painting.

Q. Do you feel moral science as a subject is very important ?

A.In the present scenario, most of the youth lack respect and they don’t know how to talk to elders. Getting marks only won’t help; Instead of having this subject only till class 8th why don’t we have it till higher classes? That’s my only concern.

Q. Would Dictation help student later in One’s own life?

A. Yes it does helps a lot. Being a student one  needs to have a clear concept and one must know the proper spelling. Difficult words could only be eased by the constant help of Dictation. I believe it really works and one doesn’t find hard to learn later when one gets the wordings clear.

Q. How many hours do you devote yourself to studies?

A. I normally take four hours daily to cover my subjects. To be frank if we study daily in internals it really helps. Even most of our teachers teaches us in parts so that it could be understood and one could memorise it easily without much effort.

Q. Why do you feel students from our state struggle hard to get admission outside? What could be the reason?

A. Student should work hard till one gets one’s goal plus here in our state we are given less marks as compared to other states. By this we find it difficult to reach the cut off marks of good colleges abroad. There are many students who are really learned but due to their low marks they don’t get admission in their dream college. I wish if our teachers should give more marks to those deserving students during class 12th std .I would work hard to get more percentage in my twelve so that I could get into a good college.

Two other students from Bright Career Academy, Sophiya from   Tiny Tot’s Unique School, Imphal  and Arvind Maibam secured 567 out of 600, both bagged 2nd position , where else  the third position was bagged by Moirangthem Julendia Devi of St.Thomas School with  566 out of 600 .
