The General Secretary of Silchar Press Club Shankar Dey who led the protest condemned the attack on the journalists and strongly decried the police failure and incompetency to book the culprits

On Tuesday the journalists of Cachar district of Assam marched towards Superintendent of Police office and gheraoed the office protesting against the attack on journalist Imad Uddin Mazumder of Katigorah area of Cachar when he was on his duty. Another journalist of Silchar Kathal road area Himu Laskar was recently threatened by a miscreant.

The protest was led by Silchar Press Club and more than 100 scribes walked in a democratic manner towards the SP office. They were not allowed to enter the SP office compound and was stopped at the gates by heavy deployment of forces.

It took almost three hours for the police officials to come out of their closed office to speak to the journalist. In between the road got blocked due to the protest creating inconvenience to the general public but the police officials remain mute inside their offices.

Later Additional Superintendent of Police Jagdish Das came out and assured that police will take action. He further informed that two people in the Katigora incident was arrested and one person in Kathal road incident are arrested and further investigation is going on. He appealed that in future also the cooperation of the media will be available to the police force. He reiterated that the police force of the district will fully cooperate with the media.

The scribes strongly demanded the removal of Officer-in-Charge of Katigora who remained inactive while Imad Uddin Mazumder was attacked in broad daylight. The members of Silchar Press Club peacefully left the venue after the assurance, though a strong message was sent to the administration that further agitation will be taken up if no satisfactory action is undertaken.
