Capacity building exercise and student exposure at IBSD, Imphal

Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal an autonomous institute of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India has undertaken two-day outreach activities on the 18th and 19th of October as part of the science awareness programme and skill development workshop. On Wednesday thirty students visited the different laboratories of IBSD, Imphal campus to get scientific insights about different Bio-resources of Manipur in particular and the northeastern region at large.

Prof. Pulok Kumar Mukherjee, Director of IBSD addressed the students to inculcate scientific temperament among them. The students were given first-hand exposure to various research activities undertaken by IBSD scientists and students.

The event was undertaken at IBSD, Imphal campus in collaboration with the Manipur Science & Technology Council (MASTEC). 

On the second day, 22 women folks were exposed to candle making and agarbatti preparation in the skill development workshop for entrepreneurship development. Here the objective is the capacity building of people in order to develop a sustainable livelihood. 

Prof. Mukherjee informed that similar activity will be taken up once or twice a month in the coming days as part of outreach activity for the development of entrepreneurs in the Imphal area and provide them with skills that the scientists and students are working on so that the trainees can undertake livelihood activities. Prof. Mukherjee also said that IBSD is thinking about how these individuals can be provided with some equipment and raw materials in order to help them build up a sustainable and long-term income source.

A database of trainees is being maintained so that further hand-holding exercises can be undertaken in the future to connect them with opportunities and market-linked activities.
