Guwahati | The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has detained 57 people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals at Kamakhya railway station in Assam, with investigators probing their reported journey from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.
The group was intercepted aboard the Brahmaputra Mail during an operation at the station. Officials are now verifying the detainees’ identities, nationality and travel documents to establish whether they were residing in India without valid authorisation.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of those detained or provided details about the documents recovered during the operation. The circumstances surrounding their reported movement from Srinagar to Assam are also under investigation.
The detention comes amid intensified efforts by Assam Police and security agencies to identify and take action against suspected foreign nationals allegedly staying in the state without valid documents.

Series of detentions in Guwahati
The latest operation follows several similar detentions in Guwahati in recent days. On October 8, Dispur Police detained four people suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals for questioning. Their identities, nationality and circumstances of entry into the city are being verified.
In separate operations conducted earlier, Guwahati Police apprehended 17 suspected Bangladeshi nationals over two days. Five of them were intercepted at Paltan Bazar railway station while travelling aboard the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express.
The investigation subsequently led police to Vintage Home hotel, where the five individuals were allegedly staying. Police arrested the hotel owner, two managers and a suspected key facilitator in connection with the alleged accommodation of foreign nationals.
In another operation, 13 suspected Bangladeshi nationals were detained at Shanti Hotel. Police initiated proceedings for their expulsion under the applicable provisions of immigration law.
Verification underway
The detention of 57 people at Kamakhya railway station adds to the ongoing series of operations targeting suspected illegal immigration in Assam. Investigators are expected to establish the group’s nationality and determine the legality of their stay and travel.
Further details about the investigation and the action to be taken against the detainees are awaited. Their suspected nationality and any alleged immigration violations remain subject to official verification.
