Guwahati : Raijor Dal MLA Akhil Gogoi has questioned the rise in Congress MP Rakibul Hussain’s declared assets between 2016 and 2024, alleging that the value increased by 477 per cent during the period Assam was governed by the BJP.

Gogoi claimed that Hussain had declared assets worth Rs 4.38 crore in his 2016 election affidavit. According to figures cited by the Raijor Dal leader, the amount rose to Rs 25.29 crore in Hussain’s 2024 election affidavit.

“During Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s tenure, listen to the untold story of the phenomenal rise in the assets of MP Rakibul,” Gogoi said while raising the issue.

Based on the figures cited by Gogoi, Hussain’s declared assets increased by about Rs 20.91 crore over the eight-year period. Hussain, a senior Congress leader, was elected from Assam’s Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency in the 2024 general election.

Gogoi’s remarks come amid continuing political differences between him and the Congress leadership in Assam, with both sides frequently trading allegations over political and organisational issues.

The asset figures referred to by Gogoi are based on election affidavits submitted by Hussain. A rise in declared assets, however, does not by itself establish financial wrongdoing or determine the source of the increase. Hussain’s response to the allegations was not immediately available.

The controversy comes at a politically significant time in Assam, with the BJP-led government and opposition parties engaged in an increasingly sharp political contest over issues of governance, accountability and the financial declarations of public representatives.
