Guwahati | Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday said discussions on flood-related concerns and the Assam-Nagaland border issue would be taken up only after relief and rehabilitation efforts are completed, stressing that the immediate priority is helping people affected by the disaster.
Addressing the ongoing flood situation, Sarma said neighbouring Nagaland, particularly the districts of Mon and Mokokchung, has suffered extensive damage due to heavy rainfall and flooding.
“At this stage, we cannot comment because Nagaland is also under flood. There has been tremendous damage in Mon and Mokokchung districts,” he said.

“We were made neighbours by nature, and we share geography. We will discuss what the issue is, how it happened and what the solution is. But there is a right time for it,” Sarma said.
Calling for compassion beyond state boundaries, he urged people to recognise the suffering of those affected by floods in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and other parts of the country. He also noted that states such as Odisha and Gujarat are grappling with flood-related challenges.
“While we are fighting the flood, we should have empathy for all the people across the country who are suffering,” he said.
Sarma indicated that he could meet the Nagaland chief minister in September or October, once the flood situation improves. By then, he said, satellite imagery and other technical inputs would help provide a clearer picture of the circumstances surrounding the issues.
“Maybe in September or October, we can meet the chief minister of Nagaland and examine what is happening. By then, a lot of satellite pictures will emerge showing what was happening,” he said.
Reiterating that relief and rehabilitation remain the government’s immediate focus, the chief minister said discussions on the border issue would be taken up after the flood crisis subsides.
