Guwahati : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set for a decisive victory in the Assam Assembly Elections 2026, with Election Commission of India (ECI) trends at 5:00 PM showing the party in a commanding position across the 126-seat.

BJP Set for Big Win in Assam; Gaurav Gogoi Loses Jorhat Seat, Opposition Struggles

According to ECI data, the BJP has won 28 seats and is leading in 54 (total 82), comfortably above the majority mark. The Indian National Congress (INC) trails with 20 seats, while regional parties like BPF (10) and AGP (9) maintain a limited presence. Smaller parties including AIUDF, Raijor Dal, and TMC registered marginal leads.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, contesting from the Jalukbari constituency, is maintaining a strong lead and is on course for another victory, reinforcing his dominance in the state’s politics. Early counting trends showed him leading by a significant margin over his nearest Congress rival. 

Sarma, who has represented Jalukbari for multiple terms, is also aiming for his sixth consecutive win, further solidifying his political stronghold.  In a major blow to the Congress, Assam PCC President Gaurav Gogoi lost the high-profile Jorhat seat, underlining the party’s struggles in the state.

Meanwhile, Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi remained in contention, but his party showed limited impact overall, reflecting the fragmented nature of the opposition vote.  Earlier in the day, Gaurav Gogoi had urged vigilance in counting, stating that every vote must be accounted for, but the trends steadily moved in favour of the BJP.

Political observers note that the opposition’s inability to form a unified front significantly benefited the BJP. Conflicting narratives and limited coordination among Congress, AIUDF, and regional parties diluted the anti-incumbency factor.  

With trends firmly favouring the BJP, the party is poised to retain power in Assam for a third consecutive term, further strengthening its foothold in the Northeast.
