Silchar: Nearly two months after being handed a lifetime ban, Silchar District Sports Association (DSA) general secretary Atanu Bhattacharjee returned to the Satindra Mohan Dev Memorial Stadium on Saturday, armed with a court-issued stay order. Unlocking his chamber, he resumed duties—pausing, for now, a controversy simmering since late May.

The dispute began with a Facebook post that sparked tensions within the DSA. On June 7, the governing body removed Bhattacharjee and barred him for life. He challenged the decision in court, but three initial pleas to continue in office were dismissed on July 15, leading many to believe his tenure was over. A final verdict was expected on September 6.

Refusing to concede, Bhattacharjee filed a fresh case on August 4. On August 7, the Civil Judge (Senior Division) No. 2 of Cachar granted him a stay order, allowing him to continue as general secretary until the court’s final judgment.

On Saturday evening, he also appeared at a DSA press conference alongside acting GS Debashish Shome. The court’s September 6 verdict will determine whether Bhattacharjee remains in office or the expulsion is upheld.
