Silchar: A high-level review meeting on the development, reconstruction, and maintenance of road and transport infrastructure in the Barak Valley was held on Thursday, with NHIDCL Executive Director Nirmal Kishan Jambhulkar and Assam Cabinet Minister Kaushik Rai in attendance.
The meeting focused on assessing the progress of several key road and bridge projects across the region and exploring measures to ensure their timely completion.
Among the major issues discussed was the proposed reconstruction of the Malidhar-Badarpur National Highway, with officials reviewing preparations for the early commencement of work. The road improvement project from Capital Point to Rangirkhari in Silchar city also came up for discussion, along with repair and renovation works on the Pailapool-Kumachhara road.

The meeting further reviewed the progress of the Silchar-Jiribam road project, which is expected to strengthen connectivity between Assam and neighbouring Manipur. Officials also assessed the current status of the Sonabarighat Bridge project and discussed steps for its effective implementation.
Speaking on the importance of infrastructure development, the participants highlighted that improved road connectivity plays a vital role in facilitating transportation, boosting trade and commerce, enhancing access to education and healthcare, and accelerating overall socio-economic growth in the region.
The state government, under the leadership of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, continues to prioritise the development of modern, safe and efficient road networks across the Barak Valley, with a focus on improving connectivity and supporting the region’s long-term growth.
The review meeting reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the timely execution of critical infrastructure projects aimed at strengthening the Barak Valley’s development trajectory.
