New Delhi: In a rare cultural moment from orbit, Mike Fincke was seen performing the traditional Assamese Bihu dance aboard the International Space Station, bringing a touch of Rongali Bihu celebrations to space.
Fincke, who is married to Assamese-origin Renita Fincke, blended space exploration with regional heritage as he marked the festival in microgravity. The gesture has drawn wide attention, highlighting how cultural traditions can travel beyond borders—even into orbit.
The development was shared by S. Mitra Kalita, an Assamese-American journalist and CEO of URL Media, who underlined the cultural significance of the moment. The unique celebration has resonated strongly across communities, symbolising pride in Assamese identity and the global reach of its traditions.
