New Delhi | BJP women MPs on Thursday urged Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to refer allegations against Congress MP Bimol Akoijam, linked to a sexual harassment complaint involving Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), to Parliament’s Ethics Committee for examination.
The MPs met the Speaker and submitted a memorandum seeking a probe into the matter. They said the findings of an internal committee warranted scrutiny at the parliamentary level. BJP MP Daggubati Purandeswari said the internal committee had reportedly held Akoijam responsible in the matter. On that basis, the delegation requested the Speaker to refer the issue to the Ethics Committee.
“We have submitted a memorandum. The internal committee has found Congress MP Bimol responsible, and we have requested the Speaker to refer the matter to the Ethics Committee for examination,” Purandeswari said.
The BJP MPs also sought consideration of whether the internal committee’s findings could have any bearing on Akoijam’s position as a Member of Parliament. They argued that the seriousness of the allegations and the committee’s reported findings merited parliamentary scrutiny.
According to Purandeswari, the Speaker assured the delegation that he would examine the memorandum and consider the legal aspects. He would also look into the possibility of referring the matter to the Ethics Committee if he considered it necessary, she said.
The BJP also questioned the Congress leadership’s response to the allegations. Purandeswari accused senior Congress leaders of remaining silent and called on Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to make their positions clear publicly. The issue has triggered a political exchange between the BJP and Congress, with attention now focused on the Speaker’s decision.
However, the submission of a memorandum does not automatically initiate an Ethics Committee inquiry. Any referral and subsequent action will depend on the Speaker’s consideration of the matter and the applicable parliamentary procedures.
Details of the internal committee’s findings and the precise nature of the allegations were not fully available in the information provided. The claims and reported findings therefore require verification against the relevant documents and responses from the parties concerned.
