Silchar: In a decisive move to safeguard public safety and protect a crucial piece of infrastructure, the Cachar district administration has imposed strict restrictions on vehicle movement over the Gammon Bridge. The decision comes amid rising concerns about the structural integrity of the ageing bridge.
Effective from July 19, vehicles weighing over 40 tonnes will be prohibited from crossing the bridge. Additionally, unauthorised body modifications on vehicles using the route will be strictly banned.
Citing potential risks posed by overloaded and structurally altered vehicles, the district administration has invoked provisions of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, to issue the order. Officials emphasized that the directive has been issued “in the interest of public safety and protection of vital infrastructure,” and will remain in force until further notice.
To ensure strict compliance, joint check-posts will be established at Digarkhal (NH-06) and Dolu (NH-27) near the respective toll gates. These posts will be manned round-the-clock by teams comprising police personnel, transport department officials, and executive magistrates, working on rotational shifts.
The administration has warned of strict penal action under the Disaster Management Act and other relevant laws against violators.
The Gammon Bridge, a lifeline for commuters and commercial traffic in Silchar, had undergone urgent repairs earlier this year following visible signs of stress. Authorities are determined to prevent a repeat of the partial closure that occurred last year due to developing cracks on the structure.
Transport associations and drivers’ unions have been urged to extend full cooperation and adhere to the restrictions to ensure the safety of the bridge and the thousands who rely on it every day.
