Silchar: A student membership drive at Radhamadhab College turned violent on Friday, with the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) accusing members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) of making a premeditated attempt on the life of one of their activists.
Police sources said the injured student, Dipankar Hazam, filed a complaint at the Rangirkhari Outpost naming ABVP members Rahul Sheal, Subhajit Choudhury, and several others as accused. Hazam alleged that the individuals had been verbally abusing and threatening him over the phone for a prolonged period.
He further claimed that during the membership drive on campus, a mob of 50–60 people, both from within and outside the institution, attacked him with sharp weapons. “It was a planned and life-threatening assault,” Hazam stated in his complaint.
The NSUI strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “cowardly attack on democratic student politics.” The organisation has demanded an impartial probe and urged the authorities to identify and take strict action against all those involved.
Police confirmed that a case has been registered and that an investigation is underway.
