Silchar | Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Silchar Member of Parliament, Dr. Rajdeep Roy, and present MLA, Silchar has officially taken charge as the party’s Prabhari (organisational in-charge) for Manipur. Outlining his roadmap ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, Dr. Roy stated that his primary mission extends beyond electoral arithmetic to restoring lasting peace, fostering inter-community harmony, and driving economic revival in the border state.
Speaking in an exclusive interview from his Silchar residence, Dr. Roy—who previously managed the party’s organizational responsibilities in Tripura for two years—acknowledged the severe challenges Manipur has faced over the past two years following waves of ethnic unrest.
Priority on Societal Assimilation and Peace
Dr. Roy highlighted that lasting progress hinges entirely on security and stability.
“Winning elections or forming a government is not the only priority of the BJP. My primary concern would be assimilation—stitching organizational activity with societal aspirations. Society wants security, safety, and peace. If peace is there, development will naturally follow,” Dr. Roy remarked.
Reflecting on his tenure in Tripura, where tribal communities comprise roughly one-third of the population, Dr. Roy noted that targeted inclusive policies helped bring communities into the mainstream. He expressed confidence that similar grassroots outreach and dialogue among all stakeholders in Manipur would help bridge social divides.
Economic Revival and Regional Transit Corridors
Addressing the sharp downturn in Manipur’s tourism sector and domestic trade, Dr. Roy underscored the need to expand regional commercial corridors rather than looking solely at external borders.
He pointed to key connectivity initiatives linking Manipur with Assam’s Barak Valley:
- Railway Network: The ongoing broad-gauge railway expansion toward Imphal, expected to reach completion within the next two to three years.
- Highway Corridors: Four-laning of the Silchar–Imphal highway to facilitate seamless goods transit through to Moreh.
- Market Integration: Creating trade synergy between Manipur’s 3 million residents and Barak Valley’s neighboring market of approximately 4.5 million people, with which Manipur shares deep cultural and historical ties.
Dr. Roy confirmed that he will undertake a comprehensive visit to Manipur following the conclusion of the Silchar Municipal Corporation elections to conduct ground-level assessments, consult state party functionaries, and interact with community representatives.
