Amit Shah to Launch VVP Phase II from Assam’s Nathanpur

Silchar: Union Home Minister Amit Shah will launch the second phase of the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) on Friday from Nathanpur in Cachar district of Assam.

Officials said the new phase will cover 1,954 border villages across 15 states and 2 Union Territories.The centrally funded scheme has an outlay of Rs 6,839 crore and will run till the financial year 2028–29. It aims to bring full development in border areas by improving basic services, building key infrastructure, and creating steady livelihood options. The effort supports the long term national goal of Viksit Bharat @2047.

The first phase of VVP, approved on February 15, 2023, covered 662 villages in 46 blocks across 19 districts in Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Ladakh.

During this phase, the Ministry of Home Affairs approved 2,558 projects worth Rs 3,431 crore. More than 8,500 activities were also carried out. These included awareness drives, health camps, local fairs and tourism promotion.

The second phase was cleared on April 2, 2025. Officials said the programme will also help residents act as alert “eyes and ears” in border regions. This is expected to improve border security and check cross border crime.

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai confirmed the expansion in a reply in the Lok Sabha on February 3.
