Silchar: District Administration Cachar marked Shahid Divas in Silchar with a quiet intensity that matched the emotion of the day. The observance, led by District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, began with the live screening of the State-level programme from Guwahati at the DC office’s New Conference Hall.

By noon, officials, students, artists, and residents had gathered in the office premises for the district-level event that honoured the 860 martyrs of the Assam Movement. Their sacrifice between 1979 and 1985 still shapes Assam’s collective sense of identity, and the turnout reflected Cachar’s solidarity with the rest of the state.

Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, CEO of Cachar Zilla Parishad Pranab Kumar Bora, Assistant Commissioners Anjali Kumari and Deepa Das, and Cultural Development Officer Snehangshu Roy were among those present.

Artists from Silchar’s cultural community joined students and staff to sing Bhupen Hazarika’s Swahid Pranamo Tomak, which gave the gathering its emotional core.

In his address, MLA Chakraborty spoke about the courage of those who died during the Assam Movement, calling their sacrifice a defining moment for Assam. He urged young people to carry forward a sense of unity and responsibility.

DC Yadav, in an earlier speech, explained why Shahid Divas matters even for districts like Cachar that did not witness any martyrdom during the movement. He said the district remains emotionally tied to the struggle and called the day a moral reminder rather than a ritual.

He encouraged residents to visit the Shahid Memorial in Boragaon as an act of gratitude and stressed the need to preserve peace, harmony, and historical awareness.

The programme ended with a collective pledge to uphold unity, respect, and integrity so the memory of the martyrs continues to shape Assam’s future.
