Silchar: Assam University has earned international acclaim after a current law student and an alumnus of its Department of Law jointly won the E-Sports Legal News Essay Competition 2025.
Their paper, titled “Intellectual Property and User Rights in Video Games and E-Sports: A Normative Quest,” was co-authored by Madhabendu Chakraborty, a B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) student, and Dhritiraj Pal Choudhury, a former student of the department and now a Legal Consultant at Boudhik IP.

The award-winning paper explores the intersection of intellectual property, user rights, and creative freedom within India’s rapidly expanding e-sports and gaming sector.
The authors propose a justice-oriented, innovation-driven framework that redefines ideas of digital ownership and participation—an approach that experts have described as a significant contribution to India’s growing body of scholarship on technology and intellectual property law.
Dhritiraj Pal Choudhury, who completed his LL.M. in Intellectual Property Rights from the National Law University, Delhi, brings professional insight to the work through his current role as a legal consultant at Boudhik IP.

Madhabendu Chakraborty, meanwhile, is a student member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), UK and of Young ICCA (International Council for Commercial Arbitration).
He has received the UGC Ishan Uday Scholarship and the Banikanta Kakati Merit Award from the Government of Assam for his academic excellence.
Chakraborty is also active in youth and policy initiatives, including the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue (Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, 2025).
University officials said the recognition highlights the academic depth and research excellence of Assam University’s Department of Law.
The achievement places both scholars among India’s emerging voices in the field of technology, intellectual property, and e-sports law—areas expected to shape the country’s legal and regulatory landscape for its booming gaming industry.
