Silchar | The Cachar district administration has issued a flood alert following a steady rise in the water level of the Barak River amid continuous rainfall, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain across several parts of Assam over the next two to three days.

In an advisory issued on Monday, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) warned that persistent rainfall could lead to urban flooding, flash floods and severe waterlogging, particularly in low-lying and vulnerable areas of the district.

 The administration said the situation is being closely monitored round the clock, with all departments, emergency response agencies and field-level officials placed on high alert to deal with any emerging situation. Officials stated that preparedness measures have already been activated and response teams are ready to respond swiftly in the event of flooding or related emergencies.

As a precaution, residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially through waterlogged and flood-prone areas. People have also been urged to stay away from rivers, streams, culverts and submerged roads, where strong currents and hidden dangers may pose significant risks.

The DDMA cautioned residents against attempting to cross flooded roads or inundated stretches on foot or by vehicle, warning that submerged potholes, damaged road surfaces and open drains could lead to serious accidents. Households have been advised to take preventive measures, including switching off electricity if floodwaters enter their homes and moving electrical appliances, valuables and important documents to safer and elevated locations.

People residing in vulnerable and low-lying areas have been asked to remain prepared for possible evacuation and cooperate fully with district authorities and emergency response teams if the need arises. The administration has also urged families to keep emergency supplies ready, including dry food, drinking water, essential medicines, flashlights, spare batteries and copies of important documents.

Residents have been encouraged to closely follow official weather bulletins and flood advisories issued by the district administration and DDMA, keep mobile phones charged and avoid circulating rumours or unverified information on social media.
