Imphal | The Centre has assured comprehensive financial and administrative support for the conservation and protection of the endangered Manipuri Pony, an indigenous breed closely associated with Manipur’s cultural traditions and polo heritage.

The assurance was given by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in response to a special mention raised in Parliament by former Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba, who drew attention to the declining population and vulnerable status of the breed.

Sanajaoba had raised the issue during the parliamentary session on March 17, seeking immediate measures to protect the Manipuri Pony and preserve its cultural and sporting significance.Polo and equestrian organisations in Imphal have also expressed concern over alleged incidents of theft, slaughter and illegal trade in pony meat.

In a recent written response, Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh said the Centre was committed to extending necessary financial and administrative assistance to support conservation efforts. According to the minister’s response, Rs 29.99 lakh was provided during the 2025-26 financial year to 86 Manipuri Pony owners.

The financial assistance was intended to help owners meet rising feed costs and address the healthcare needs of the animals. The government has also initiated measures to identify and secure suitable grazing areas for the breed.

Surveys have been conducted across Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Kakching districts to identify and designate appropriate grazing grounds for the ponies. The Manipur government is working with pony owners, traditional polo clubs and other stakeholders to strengthen conservation measures and safeguard the breed’s habitat.

Awareness programmes and workshops are also being conducted to educate pony owners and caretakers about common diseases, preventive healthcare and proper animal management. The Manipuri Pony has played a significant role in the history and development of polo in Manipur and remains an important part of the state’s cultural heritage.

The latest measures by the Centre and the state government are aimed at addressing the breed’s declining population, improving animal healthcare, securing grazing habitats and supporting local communities involved in its preservation.
