NEW DELHI | Delhi Police have registered a case against Congress Lok Sabha MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual harassment involving female students, officials said on Monday.

The FIR was registered on October 11 at Vasant Kunj North police station following a complaint by JNU’s chief security officer. The case has been filed under Sections 75, 75(1)(i), 75(1)(iv) and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deal with sexual harassment and related offences.

Police said the matter was under investigation. The allegations have not yet been established, and the registration of an FIR does not amount to a finding of guilt.

The case has also triggered a political confrontation, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing the Congress leadership of failing to respond adequately to allegations concerning women’s safety.

Addressing a press conference at the BJP headquarters on Sunday, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj questioned the Congress leadership over allegations that Akoijam had asked sexually inappropriate questions to female students during academic assessments and engaged in unwelcome physical contact.

Swaraj also raised questions about the reported timing and circumstances of examinations, claiming that female students had been called to the MP’s residence late at night for assessments. She referred to a reported viva examination that continued until 11.40 pm and alleged sexually explicit conduct in the classroom.

The claims cited by the BJP have not been independently established through the police investigation. Targeting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Swaraj questioned whether his stated opposition to patriarchy was being reflected in the party’s response to the allegations.

“Is ‘Smash the patriarchy’ merely and exclusively political rhetoric for you – just a political gimmick?” she asked.

Swaraj also criticised Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leaders Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for not publicly responding to the matter. She claimed the allegations had surfaced in May and urged Rahul Gandhi to take action against Akoijam, referring to 11 female students in her remarks.

The BJP’s criticism has added a political dimension to a case that now falls under police investigation. However, allegations made by political leaders and reports of alleged misconduct must be distinguished from facts established through the legal process.

The police probe will determine the circumstances surrounding the complaint and examine the allegations against Akoijam. No conclusion on the merits of the claims has been established so far.
