Aizawl: The Election Commission (EC) is set to review complaints of alleged Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations against Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and his adviser, Dr. Lorrain Lalpekliana Chinzah, in connection with the upcoming Dampa assembly bypoll.

According to officials, the state’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) will forward the case to the EC for a final decision after receiving explanations from the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM). The complaints were earlier investigated by the Mamit District Election Officer and the Dampa Returning Officer. Their reports have now been submitted to the poll panel, which is expected to decide on the matter by Monday.

The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) has accused the chief minister and his adviser of violating the MCC by announcing development projects and distributing free medicines ahead of the bypoll.

MNF advocate Zothansangi Hmar alleged that Lalduhoma announced a Rs 700-crore water supply project covering Reiek and 14 nearby villages, and promised turmeric processing machines to local farmers. Dr. Chinzah, meanwhile, was accused of holding free health clinics at Parvatui and Phulpui West on October 17, where medicines were distributed to residents.

Officials also confirmed that a show-cause notice was issued to the BJP for allegedly distributing free T-shirts in parts of the Dampa constituency.

The Dampa bypoll is slated for November 11, with counting to be held on November 14. The ruling ZPM has fielded singer-preacher Vanlalsailova, while the MNF, Congress, and BJP have nominated Dr. R. Lalthangliana, John Rotluangliana, and Lalhmingthanga respectively.

The seat fell vacant following the death of MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo on July 21.
