Silchar: An essay competition on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was held on Tuesday at the Silchar District Sports Association (DSA) pavilion, organised by the Silchar Netaji Murti Nabanirman O Sthapana Committee. The event formed part of a series of programmes leading up to the inauguration of a new statue of Netaji at Rangirkhari Point later this month.

The inaugural ceremony was attended by Cachar District Commissioner Mridul Yadav, MLA and committee convener Dipayan Chakraborty, Cachar SSP Numal Mahatta, ASP Subrata Sen, DSA president Shibabrata Dutta, educationist Dr. Bibhas Deb, and Netaji researcher Nihar Ranjan Paul.

Committee treasurer Rudra Narayan Gupta along with several prominent personalities including Debashish Shome, Debojyoti Swami, Arijit Goswami, Satananda Bhattacharjee, Buddhadeb Choudhury, Sanjay Roy, Mithun Roy, and Santanu Roy were also present. The programme was conducted by committee co-convener Uttam Kumar Saha.

More than 400 participants from around 131 schools took part in the essay writing contest, where students were given 45 minutes to write within a 250-word limit.

Earlier phases of the competition had seen participation from 55,000 students across 214 schools in Cachar district, along with 25 schools from Sribhumi and 16 schools from Hailakandi. Winners of those rounds advanced to Tuesday’s final essay event.

Speaking on the occasion, Dipayan Chakraborty announced that Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the new 24.5-foot statue of Netaji, sculpted by renowned artist Dr. Arun Yogiraj, at Rangirkhari Point on August 31 at 4 pm.

Numal Mahatta lauded the initiative, calling it a noble effort to inspire students with Netaji’s ideals. Mridul Yadav echoed the sentiment, describing August 31 as a “landmark day” for Silchar and Barak Valley.

Alongside the essay contest, the committee also organised speech, quiz, and art competitions, with the latter witnessing participation from more than 1,760 students, including entries from across India.
