GUWAHATI | AASU-backed candidate Nayan Protim Bora has launched a hunger strike after his candidature for Gauhati University Students’ Union general secretary was cancelled, sparking protests on the campus.

Bora and his supporters are demanding that Gauhati University disclose the grounds for rejecting his nomination. They have alleged that the university has failed to provide a clear explanation despite repeated requests.

Following the cancellation of Bora’s candidature, ABVP-backed candidate Madhurjya Plabon Talukdar was declared elected unopposed to the general secretary’s post.

The dispute intensified on Friday, September 25, when protesters staged demonstrations on the university campus and burnt tyres while pressing the authorities to clarify the decision.

Bora’s supporters said the hunger strike would continue until the university provides an explanation for the cancellation of his candidature.

The university authorities have not publicly stated the reasons for rejecting Bora’s candidature so far. The development has added tension to the Gauhati University students’ union election process, with supporters of the two student organisations taking opposing positions over the general secretary’s post.
