Guwahati: Gaurav Gogoi on Monday conceded defeat in the Assam Assembly elections, accepting personal responsibility for the opposition alliance’s loss and vowing to continue as a strong voice in the state legislature.
In a statement issued after the results, Gogoi said, “We humbly accept the mandate delivered by the people of Assam,” while also acknowledging his defeat from the Jorhat constituency. He added that the party would carry out its responsibilities sincerely as a constructive opposition.
The outcome is seen as a major setback for the Indian National Congress-led alliance.
Despite the defeat, Gogoi asserted that the Congress would remain a combative and responsible opposition, continuing to raise public issues inside and outside the Assembly.
The results mark another challenging phase for the Congress in Assam, where the party once held long-standing political dominance before losing ground to the Bharatiya Janata Party in recent years.
