KRC TIMES Assam Bureau
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday called for a stronger, modern and people-focused policing system in the state, with greater emphasis on effective investigations and timely justice.
Sarma reviewed the state’s law and order situation with Director General of Police Harmeet Singh and senior officials of the Police and Home Department on August 17.

The meeting discussed several key areas, including crime prevention, child marriage, Dial 112 emergency services, police housing, and the functioning of Home Guards and Village Defence Parties. The Chief Minister stressed the need to strengthen the investigation process and ensure that criminal cases reach their logical conclusion. He also called for timely convictions so that offenders are brought to justice without unnecessary delay.
The review comes amid concerns over the pace of criminal investigations in Assam. Government data reportedly shows that chargesheets were filed in only 54 per cent of nearly 10 lakh cases registered in the state since 2016. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota separately met the Eastern Inspector General of Assam Rifles. Their meeting focused on security, border management and development-related issues.
The government’s latest review highlights the need for a more efficient policing system in Assam, particularly in areas of investigation, prosecution and delivery of justice.
