India-Bangladesh relations have been exceptionally friendly and cordial and this was furthermore established when in May’22, heavy monsoons resulted in disruption of supplies of Petroleum Goods to the state of Assam and Tripura in India, and governments of both the countries took the lead to facilitate movement of Petroleum Goods via the territory of Bangladesh to NE India.

Taking initiative forward IndianOil and the Roads and Highways Department of the Government of Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 3rd August 2022 whereby an option of the alternate route via Bangladesh is evolved to overcome the crisis of fuel supplies in case of similar emergency situations in future. The MoU will be valid till November 2022.

The MoU was signed by Mohd Mazher Alam, Country Manager Bangladesh, on behalf of Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. and Abdullah Mamun, Additional Chief Engineer, Technical Services, Roads and Highways Department, Bangladesh at Dhaka. The event was also graced by A B M Amin Ullah Nuri (Secretory of Bangladesh Road and Highway Division) and Pratik D Negi (1st Secretory Commerce and Energy, Indian High Commission, Dhaka), Md. Fazle Rabbe (Additional Chief Engineer, Sylhet zone), Neelima Akhter (Additional Secretary), and Sultana Yasmin (Joint Secretary).

The agreement has been made possible by continuous herculean efforts and coordination efforts from Indian High Commission Dhaka, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commerce Ministry, Communication Ministry, and Road and Highways Department of Bangladesh.

The Petroleum / LPG road tankers will enter in sealed conditions at Dawki-Tamabil (Meghalaya) and will exit at Chatlapur-Kailasshar (Tripura) in sealed conditions. Around 140 kms of Bangladesh roads will be used. Per day a maximum of 40 numbers of tankers will be sent from each side. The service will be for a short term to tide over the immediate and urgent need for alternative supply routes owing to infrastructure damage sustained in Assam due to flooding through this year’s rains.
