The controversy erupted after Khera raised questions in a press briefing, alleging irregularities linked to multiple passports and large-scale financial holdings

Guwahati: The political confrontation between Congress leader Pawan Khera and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has intensified, following serious allegations concerning the nationality and official documents of the Chief Minister’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
The controversy erupted after Khera raised questions in a press briefing, alleging irregularities linked to multiple passports and large-scale financial holdings. The claims triggered a sharp response from Sarma, who dismissed them as baseless and politically motivated.
Reacting strongly, the Chief Minister also mocked the scale of financial allegations, particularly the claim that assets worth Rs 52,000 crore were involved. He argued that the figures were unrealistic and lacked basic economic sense.
“If a Chief Minister earns for 20 years, he still will not be able to make Rs 52,000 crores,” Sarma said, questioning the credibility of the accusations.
Sarma further asserted that the allegations were part of a deliberate attempt to malign his family’s reputation ahead of the elections. He indicated that legal action could be pursued against those making what he described as defamatory statements.
The escalating war of words between the two leaders has added a fresh political flashpoint, with both sides showing no signs of backing down.
