Union Minister of State, Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju who is on a two day visit in Manipur inspected the ongoing construction of the National Sports University at Koutruk in Imphal west district along with department concerns today.

 The union minister also inaugurated the synthetic football turf with 200 people seating gallery at Sports Authority of India, Takyel Imphal and inspected the Khuman Lampak Sports complex where he assured to provide latest sports equipment to the sportspersons and coaches at Khuman Lampak.

Observing that some of the sports facilities in the complex are old, Kiren instructed the sports officials to send a proposal so that more grants under Khello India can be sanction to improve sports facilities for Manipur.

He also mentioned about providing extra playing facilities center in the hill districts and assure of providing budgetary and technical support to spread the game of Thang Ta in other parts of the country.

During his speech at National Sports University, Koutruk, the union minister assured that the national sports university will be world-class university and said that the idea behind the national sports university is not just to make it a sports institute but a symbolic institute which will attract people from different parts of the world.

Kiren said, “When I took over the minister for youth affairs and sports, one of the agenda in my first meeting was the national sports university in Manipur”.

He informed that the university was announced in the first budget in 2014 when the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over and further said that the development of the university was discussed in detail during the first meeting after he became the minister of youth affairs and sports. Expressing disappointment that the construction of the university was hampered, Kiren also assured that he will focus on the development of the university to an international level university.

He said that frequent violent movement in the state not only hamper the development of the state but it is also self-destructive. Stating that gun culture will not bring any positive outcome, the minister urged people to utilize the power of pen or take part in sports activities for a better society.

The newly inaugurated synthetic football turf at Sports Authority of India complex, Takyel was set up with 5 Crores under Khello India and 5.43 Crores provided by Sports Authority of India.  

Later officials of department concerns also briefed the Union Minister at the old secretariat. Director of Youth Affairs and Sports, Amstrong Pamei suggested the need to popularize the game of Sepak Takraw and urged the Union Minister to introduce the game to some sports channel.

He also briefed the Union Minister on the achievement of Manipur sportspersons and also said that love for sports in the state can be seen even in state festivals such as Yaoshang in the valley which includes sports and sports tournaments organized on Independence Day and Republic Day in the hills.

Under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region and North East Council funding, the state has created seven districts sports complex in Churachandpur, Chandel, Tamenglong, Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul, Bishnupur, Thoubal and Jiribam where few have been completed and others under construction.

Deliberating on the status of National Sports Academy at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex Imphal, he also informed that the players have achieved 300 medals at the national level during the last seven years. He also informed that the academy has 270 students from over 13 states of the country running from class 6 standard till class 12. Proposals for accreditation of the academy have been submitted to the head office of Sports Authority of India.
