JAIPUR | Manipur’s rich cultural heritage took centre stage at the Miss Universe India 2026 pageant in Jaipur, with the state’s traditional textiles, craftsmanship and polo legacy reflected in the costume worn by its representative, Thadoi.

The ensemble, designed by Manipuri fashion designer Robert Naorem, draws inspiration from Manipur’s long association with polo, locally known as sagol kangjei. The design presents the sport not merely as a game but as a symbol of strategy, skill and grace rooted in the state’s cultural history.

The costume combines traditional tribal motifs, handcrafted fabrics and sarong-inspired drapes, while textiles associated with the Tangkhul and Kabui communities have been incorporated into the ensemble.

According to Naorem, the design seeks to bring together Manipur’s diverse communities and showcase their shared craftsmanship and cultural traditions on a national platform.

Thadoi is representing Manipur at the ongoing Miss Universe India 2026 pageant in Jaipur. Naorem, who serves as the state director of Miss Universe India, holds the licence to organise the state-level pageant in Manipur.

The costume’s emphasis on indigenous textiles and motifs highlights the diversity of Manipur’s traditional craftsmanship while connecting it with the state’s distinctive polo heritage.

The Miss Universe India pageant combines beauty with advocacy, confidence and cultural representation. Manipur’s participation this year has provided another platform for the state’s traditional fashion and heritage to gain national visibility.

India has produced three Miss Universe winners – Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta and Harnaaz Sandhu. All three have previously visited Manipur and walked in creations by Naorem, further contributing to the visibility of Manipuri fashion on national and international pageant platforms.

With its fusion of polo heritage, indigenous textiles and community traditions, the latest ensemble places Manipur’s cultural identity at the heart of the national pageant stage.
