TABUK / DUBAI / TEL AVIV — Global leaders and aviation authorities have lauded the extraordinary courage and presence of mind displayed by Indian commercial pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, whose swift actions helped prevent a catastrophic crash after a violent altercation broke out inside the cockpit of a Flydubai passenger jet.

The Boeing 737 aircraft, operating flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv with approximately 170 to 180 passengers onboard, was forced to execute an emergency landing at Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk, northwestern Saudi Arabia.

Terrifying Mid-Air Plunge

According to flight-tracking data and eyewitness testimonies, the crisis erupted roughly two hours after departure as the airliner was cruising at altitude. Without warning, the co-pilot attacked Captain Machchhar with a sharp object, inflicting serious stab injuries in an apparent attempt to seize control and bring down the aircraft.

As a violent struggle ensued inside the flight deck, the aircraft pitched into a steep dive, shedding an estimated 14,000 to 16,000 feet within moments. The transponder briefly broadcast emergency squawk code 7500, indicating “unlawful interference” or cockpit hijack.

Despite suffering severe injuries and heavy blood loss, Captain Machchhar fought back against the assailant, kept the controls from stalling into an unrecoverable dive, and managed to level the wings.

Passengers and Cabin Crew Storm the Flight Deck

Alerted by the violent descent and the commotion, cabin crew and passengers rushed forward. Working together, they forced open the cockpit door and wrestled the attacking co-pilot to the floor, restraining him before further damage could be inflicted.

Fortunately, two off-duty Flydubai pilots traveling as passengers stepped in immediately to assist the wounded captain. Taking command of the flight controls, the relief flight crew coordinated with Saudi Air Traffic Control and safely touched down at Tabuk Airport.

Official Statements and International Praise

Upon touchdown, Saudi security forces boarded the aircraft and detained the suspect. Both Captain Machchhar and the detained co-pilot were rushed to a regional medical facility in Tabuk for emergency treatment. Diplomatic officials confirmed that Captain Machchhar’s condition has since stabilised.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly commended the captain, cabin crew, and civilian passengers, stating:

”They showed exceptional resourcefulness and courage. They saved hundreds of lives and averted a massive international tragedy.”

Flydubai Statement:

A spokesperson for Flydubai acknowledged that a serious altercation had occurred on the flight deck, emphasizing:

”All passengers and crew are safe and accounted for. We extend our deepest gratitude to our crew and the authorities for their rapid response. A comprehensive regulatory investigation is currently underway.”

Who is Captain Smit Machchhar?

A seasoned aviator originally from Mumbai, India, Captain Smit Machchhar has accumulated nearly 9,750 flying hours across more than a decade in commercial aviation. He previously served as a senior commander and line training captain with India’s SpiceJet before joining Flydubai in June 2022.

Colleagues and flight training instructors across the aviation fraternity have described him as a consummate professional whose rigorous training, calm under pressure, and sheer resilience prevented what could have been one of the decade’s worst aviation disasters. Investigations by UAE and Saudi aviation safety bodies remain ongoing.
