Silchar: The Namasudra Parishad of Assam has sought urgent intervention from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged killing of a 32-year-old man from Katigorah, Cachar district, by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel.
In a memorandum signed by 24 members, the Parishad claimed that on the night of August 1, Nirmal Namasudra (Roy), son of late Horolal Namasudra of Saidpur Amtola village, was detained by BSF jawans near a bridge close to the Indo-Bangladesh border while stepping out to relieve himself. He was allegedly subjected to severe physical assault, losing consciousness at the spot. Villagers attempting to intervene were reportedly threatened and dispersed.
According to the representation, BSF personnel later took Nirmal to the nearest primary health centre, left him at the porch, and left. The next morning, he was referred to Silchar Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The incident has triggered widespread protests by the Namasudra Parishad’s Katigorah unit and local residents, who condemned the “inhuman” conduct of the BSF. Though an FIR was filed by the victim’s brother at Katigorah Police Outpost, the Parishad alleges that no concrete action has been taken.
“The BSF is meant to safeguard Indians, but here an innocent Indian was killed for no valid reason,” the letter states, demanding a high-level probe, strict legal action against those responsible, and Rs10 lakh compensation for the victim’s impoverished family. The memorandum was signed by Lokenath Deb Roy, Rakesh Ranjan Roy, Anup Roy, Dilip Roy, Bappa Roy, Dipon Chandra Roy, Swapan Sarkar, Nripendra Roy, among others.
