Imphal | An armed group attacked a Naga village in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Tuesday night, firing several rounds before setting fire to at least nine houses, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident took place around 9.30 pm at Tokpa Liangmai Naga village, near Tumnoupokpi Thangal village. Most of the houses targeted in the attack were reportedly kutcha structures. Residents from nearby villages rushed to the area and helped contain the fire, officials said. No casualties were immediately reported.

Additional security personnel have since been deployed in and around the village to prevent further violence and restore normalcy, officials said. The Liangmai Naga Council, Manipur, condemned the attack and alleged that armed men from another community were responsible.

The organisation claimed that 10 houses and a church were burnt in the incident. In a statement, the council described the alleged targeting of civilians, residential properties and a place of worship as a “grave and reprehensible act of violence”.

It demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the arson and called for security to be strengthened in the area. The latest incident comes amid continuing tensions and sporadic violence in parts of Manipur, raising fresh concerns over the security of vulnerable villages and communities in the state.
