Silchar: A wave of anger has swept across the Barak Valley after Dimasa Writers’ Forum President Mukteswar Kemprai allegedly referred to the eleven Language Martyrs of the Barak Valley as “Bangladeshis.” The remarks have been widely condemned as an insult to the region’s linguistic identity and self-respect. Several organizations have already filed separate police complaints across multiple stations, though Kemprai has not yet been arrested, intensifying public outrage.

In this context, representatives of the Core Committee of the Public Opinion Forum met with the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police, Southern Range, Kankan Jyoti Saikia, on Thursday and submitted a detailed memorandum.

The delegation briefed the DIG on the entire incident and demanded strict legal action against Kemprai for his derogatory comments about the Language Martyrs.

DIG Kankan Jyoti Saikia listened attentively and assured the delegation that he would personally look into the matter and discuss it with the Superintendent of Police, Cachar. The delegation expressed satisfaction with his response.

The memorandum clearly demanded that Mukteswar Kemprai must issue a public and unconditional apology. Failing that, the authorities should take immediate legal action against him as per law. According to the representatives, Kemprai’s comments have not only disrespected the Language Martyrs but have also deeply hurt the dignity of the entire Barak Valley community.

Several organizations also clarified that the people of the Barak Valley have never had any enmity or conflict with the Dimasa-speaking community—neither in the past nor in the present, and they wish for continued harmony in the future. Barak, they said, has always stood for coexistence and communal harmony. However, Mukteswar Kemprai must personally take full responsibility for his statement.

Copies of the memorandum have also been submitted to relevant public representatives. Leaders of various organizations present at the meeting expressed satisfaction with the DIG’s sincerity and prompt assurance and extended their gratitude to him.
