Diphu : Gaurav Gogoi, Member of Parliament (MP), Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President, and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, faced a mixed reception during his two-day visit to Karbi Anglong district.

While party workers extended a warm welcome at the Deithor Mandal Congress Committee and Bokajan Block Congress Committee, locals in Santipur under Borpathar Police Station staged protests against him.

The protests in Santipur saw locals holding placards with slogans such as “Gaurav Gogoi Go Back”, “Pakistani Agent Gaurav Gogoi Go Back,” and “Congress Party Murdabad” reflecting discontent among some community members.

The demonstrations echo recent controversies surrounding Gogoi, including allegations raised by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about his alleged links with Pakistan, which have stirred political tensions in the state.

Despite the protests, Gogoi was warmly received by Congress party workers at the Deithor Mandal and Bokajan Block Congress Committee offices. Several party members gathered to show their support, emphasizing the party’s commitment to addressing local issues and strengthening its organizational base in the region.

Gogoi’s visit comes at a time when the Congress party is grappling with challenges in Assam, including a recent electoral setback in the panchayat polls, particularly in Jorhat, his home constituency. The protests in Santipur highlight the polarized political climate in the state as the 2026 assembly elections approach.

His visit aimed to engage with local party units and address grassroots concerns, but the protests underscore the challenges he faces in maintaining public support amidst ongoing controversies.
